Human Rights Day is December 10

December 10, 2020

“I love civil rights!” written in multiple languages over a heart shape. State of Minnesota logo.Content provided by the Department of Human Rights:

Human Rights Day is observed on December 10 every year to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. In declaring the dignity and worth of every person, this document helped sparked powerful action throughout the world.

In Minnesota, it helped bring about the creation of one of the strongest civil rights laws in the country, the Minnesota Human Rights Act. Enforced by the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, the law prohibits discrimination in different areas such as employment, housing, and education based on protected class such as race, disability, and sex.

The Minnesota Human Rights Act is a powerful tool used to help address systemic discrimination. The law boldly exclaims, “Discrimination threatens the rights and privileges of the inhabitants of this state and menaces the institutions and foundations of democracy.”

All of us have a role to play when it comes to addressing racial and gender inequities, centering equity in our decisions, and building inclusive workplaces. We must continue to celebrate and honor our interconnectedness and see one another as complex, beautiful beings.

3 ways you can celebrate human rights day:

  1. Get involved in your local human rights commission. Minnesota is fortunate to have human rights commissions and councils throughout the state that operate at a city, county, or regional level to advance civil rights and promote equity and inclusion.
  2. Mark your calendar for 2021 MLK celebration. On January 18, Governor Walz and Lt. Governor Flanagan will host the 35th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. To build a community where we can thrive, actively work to end racism and poverty, and embrace our connections, we’ll gather virtually through a pre-recorded celebration. Stay tuned for more details!
  3. Lead with love. Be intentional about letting people know they are welcome and valued. If you see discrimination or hate, speak up. You can report discrimination and bias to the Minnesota Department of Human Rights.
