What is Commit to be Counted?
Commit to Be Counted is a tool that lets local organizations communicate directly with Minnesotans about the upcoming 2020 Census. The tool works by having individuals fill out a form with their contact information, which our partners can then use to send them locally-tailored updates about the Census. Commit to be Counted allows community-based organizations to distribute the information about the 2020 Census which matters most to their communities, as opposed to having most of the contact done through state or federal government channels.
How will the collected data be used?
Commit To Be Counted records basic contact information, such as phone number, name, and email, using a paper form or a web-based app (coming soon). The data your organization collects is then uploaded to a secure database. Each form is embedded with a unique user code for your organization that allows the State Demographic Center to sort the data into a unique database for your community. This approach lets your organization tailor your messaging around the Census to appeal to the people whom you know the best.
What should I say to people when I ask them to fill out the Commit to be Counted form?
Every conversation will be different! We recognize that community-based organizations know their audience best. Therefore, the direction of the conversation will largely depend on who you’re speaking with. It is always important to make sure people know that the data collected on this form is strictly confidential. It will ONLY be used to provide limited updates about the 2020 Census. It also helps to mention that the purpose of Commit To Be Counted is to ensure that the 2020 Census counts every Minnesotan. We want a complete count! That’s the best way to make sure all Minnesotans are represented and receive their fair share of federal dollars.
Next Steps after the data is collected
- Print off the Commit to be Counted form with your unique user ID or embed the form on your organization’s website. The form and embedded website link will be emailed to you directly. [Coming soon]
- Attend or organize a community event and ask the people there to commit to being counted!
- If you are using a physical form then scan, fax, or mail the completed forms to Rachel.Dame@state.mn.us. All forms need to be returned within one week of the event.
- The State Demographic Center (that’s us!) will follow up with your CCC to provide the contact information for all the individuals in your community that completed a form.
Please note: We are encouraging partners to use the digital version of the Commit to be Counted form.
