Legislative Update
March 22nd was a legislative deadline. Policy bills needed to be heard in the House and the Senate before being considered for final passage into law. The deadline resulted in packed committee schedules and extensive hearings. Despite expectations of a quieter policy-only year, the 2023-2024 biennium saw a record number of bills introduced. Follow the progress of some of our policy priorities in the current legislative update.
Living with Invisible Disabilities: MCD’s Trevor Turner Interviewed on MPR
MCD Public Policy Director Trevor Turner recently spoke with Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) about what it’s like to live with an invisible disability. Trevor discussed his experiences with Usher Syndrome, a rare genetic disease that affects both hearing and vision. It causes deafness and hearing loss, as well as retinitis pigmentosa – a group of eye diseases affecting the retina. Trevor recalled what it’s like deciding how much to disclose about his disability. In the News: Disability Advocacy Day 2024
On March 27th, MCD co-hosted Disability Advocacy Day at the Capitol. People with disabilities and disability advocates from all over Minnesota gathered for a Rally in the Rotunda. WCCO covered the event as people came together to fight for disability justice, connect with each other, and share their stories with legislators. We support and promote public policy goals that positively impact the lives of people with disabilities. MCD helps policymakers understand how their decisions affect the disability community and brings together members of the government and the public to comment on legislation.
Each session, lawmakers introduce dozens of bills that will impact the disability community. The amount of legislation introduced each session makes it a daunting task to follow the ones you might be interested in. We compile a list of disability-related legislation to make it easier for you to stay informed.
There are over half a million valid disability parking certificates and plates in Minnesota. We provide the “Do’s and Don’ts” of disability parking, as well as information on disability parking laws and regulations.
A service animal is a dog, or in some cases a miniature horse, individually trained to do work or perform tasks for someone with a disability. Service animals are different from Emotional Support Animals (ESA) and can go almost anywhere with their owners. MCD works to inform the public about service animals and protect the rights of people with disabilities.
