Reminder About Snow Removal: It Can Save a Life!

February 22, 2013

With the recent heavy snowfall here in the metro area, the Minnesota State Council on Disability wants to remind everyone to PLEASE SHOVEL YOUR SIDE WALKS AND CURB CUTS. The side walks and walkways are the lifeline for many people with disabilities and our senior community. When they are not cleared off this can present difficulties with trying to get to work, the grocery store, or medical appointments. Basic health and safety issues can be affected as well.

In most communities there are local ordinances that require snow removal on public sidewalks within a given period of time. Fines may result if residences and business owners do not abide by those ordinances. Do the right thing and shovel your sidewalk as soon as possible. DON’T WAIT FOR THE SNOW TO MELT! This could be a matter of life or death for someone if they are forced to into the street to get to their destination. Contact your local city hall for more information on snow removal ordinances.

Additionally, if you are in charge of snow removal for business (refer to photo), don’t use the the disability parking area as the snow “dump.” Not only does it make life difficult for people with disabilities, it’s simply against the law (MN Statute 169.346 2a).
