MSCOD Executive Director Checks Out New Accessible Restroom Trailer at Capitol!

April 21, 2015

MSCOD Executive Director tours accessible restroom trailer at Minnesota State Capitol. The Minnesota State Capitol is under a huge renovation for the next two years and restrooms in the Capitol are very limited for use. However there is a brand new fully accessible restroom trailer outside the south side of the Capitol next to the grand stair case. Besides being fully wheelchair accessible with lateral transfer space, it is also heated, has running hot water and has lovely music piped in too! So next time you are visiting the Minnesota State Capitol, take a break and relax in the brand new restroom trailer outside the State Capitol. (Yes, there are also two inaccessible restrooms with these same nice features too!)

Check out the video tour. (Video was created with no sound.)

Video Description

MSCOD Executive Director Joan Willshire waves to the camera and drives her automatic wheelchair up the accessible ramp to the restroom door. She grabs the door handle with her left hand and moves her wheelchair in reverse until the door opens. Bracing the door with her left hand, she moves into the restroom with the camera following closely at her back.

Joan stops in the middle of the restroom. In the left corner is a toilet with a grab bar on the wall to the left and a grab bar on the wall immediately behind the toilet. She moves her arms in a sweeping motion to indicate both grab bars, and the camera shakily follows as she gestures to the right. On the wall to the right is a paper towel dispenser with trash bin, a soap dispenser, and a sink with a mirror above it.

Joan gestures upwards, and the camera follows to shakily focus on two recessed lights in the ceiling. The camera then moves around Joan to the right and turns to focus on her from the front. She back ups on opens the door with her right hand. Letting go of the handle, she continues to back against the door with her wheelchair to open it. She braces the door with her left arm as she backs down the ramp, and the camera moves to follow her out. The door begins to close, and the video ends.
