25 Days of the ADA: Looking Back and Looking Forward

July 12, 2024

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ushered in a new era of equal opportunity and access for millions. Today, as we revisit our “25 Days of the ADA” series, we’re reminded that this legislation isn’t just a piece of history—it’s a living, breathing force that continues to shape our world.

The ADA’s impact stretches far beyond ramps and parking spaces. It has transformed how we design our cities, conduct business, provide education, and interact as a society. From the Olmstead decision championing community living over institutionalization to the ongoing push for equitable healthcare access, the ADA continues to break down barriers and challenge societal norms.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month this July, we recognize the progress made and the work that lies ahead. The 34th anniversary of the ADA on July 26th isn’t just a commemoration—it’s a call to action. We’ve seen strides in areas like employment rights, accessible design, and transportation. Yet, in an increasingly digital world, new frontiers emerge. The fight for equity now extends to ensuring equal access in virtual spaces and emerging technologies.

In this series we explore how the ADA has influenced everything from currency design to voting rights, from educational opportunities to healthcare equity. Each post serves as a testament to the ADA’s far-reaching impact and its continued relevance in our daily lives.

But the ADA is more than a set of guidelines—it’s a reflection of our values as a society. It embodies the belief that disability is a natural part of human diversity, and that inclusion benefits us all.

Join us as we revisit these 25 posts Together, we can ensure that the promise of the ADA continues to evolve, adapt, and create a world where everyone can participate fully.
