Plan of Action

Preparing an emergency plan of action can reduce fear, help you respond quickly and stay safe while responding to an emergency. Knowing what to do and where to go can help people feel less afraid of the unknown and reach safety faster.

Plan of Action Checklist
Gather all the information you need: Personal, health and medical information; items that you use such as hearing aids; and communication issues, such as the best way for first responders to talk to you and assist you.

Communicate With Others
Communicate with family members, neighbors, and direct support professionals. Develop a network of individuals that you can rely on for assistance. Meet with these individuals and create a preparedness plan, discuss what would happen in different types of emergencies: Fire, tornado, flood, etc.

Plan and Practice
Determine how you will exit or escape from your home in an emergency. Practice your exit plan to become familiar with each step.

ICE: In Case of an Emergency
First responders need to be able to access your emergency contacts.

Find your local emergency manager by visiting Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
