Text-to-911

Text-to-911 is now available throughout Minnesota!

Text-to-911, an alternative to calling 911, is available as an important service to use for people with and without disabilities in place of calling. Text-to-911 is available for a person who may need to be more discreet when reporting a crime (such as when an individual is being pressured not to call 911, or when an individual must be quiet to stay safe) or for a person who is deaf, hard of hearing, or non-verbal.

Instructions to use Text-to-911:

  1. In the “To” part of the text message, enter the numbers 911.
  2. In the text message, describe your location or provide an address and describe the emergency.
  3. Press send.
  4. Dispatch will ask if they can voice call you so that they can gather information more quickly and gather your exact location. If you are not able, let them know. You do not need to identify as deaf or hard of hearing.
  5. Wait for a response with instructions and respond promptly.

Text-to-911 is available throughout Minnesota, anywhere you have cell phone service. For more information, visit Text-to-911.

Do not use emojis, slang, abbreviated text, or photos in Text-to-911.
